Smart Dust

The tiny squares you see in front in Abe Lincoln's nose are called "Smart Dust".  These are tiny sensors able to pick up information about their environment.  They can be the size of dust motes and are part of a technological trend called M.E.M.S. - MicroElectrical and Mechanical Systems.
